Introduction to Karnataka Hindu festivals (habba)

Few days before any habba(festival) my daughter or my daughters-in-law, sometimes my sons :) would call me from different parts of the world and ask me what are the preparation required for that particular habba. Hence decided to start a blog about the common big habbas of the year(my grand children are still in a shock that I use a laptop and created my own blog!!)

To
All the dear young couples ......

Friends , you all have  chosen to live in a nuclear family, away from your in- laws and parents. Along with the many so called advantages of this system , you are devoid of many great advantages of living in a joint family.
Your children are not getting sufficient  information  about our culture, tradition and they  are missing the festivals and all the wonderful cuisines that are prepared on those days.
In this blog I will try to explain each festival on the particular month they are celebrated  and the particular dishes we have to make on those days. With a brief introduction of the poojas , I have given the recipe for the main dish that has to be prepared on that day.
I hope and wish some of you at least will be benefited with this piece of information.

Some of the things common to follow are ...............................
Please wake up early in the morning, take an oil bath
and ladies... wear a Saree, keep bindi
and if available some flowers in your hair . Your husband and kids
will be very pleased to see you like this and through out the day
they will be in pleasant mood.
I might sound like your Mother-in-law but trust me your family will love to see you clad beautifully in a saree. Light the lamps in your
Pooja room and decorate
the idols and photos with flowers, reciting some slokas or singing devotional songs

Heser Bele + Kadle Bele Kosambari (two in one ) i.e. green gram dal with few chana dal,
  • Palya (also two in one) like green beans with one potato or cabbage with one capsicum (Bell Pepper)etc
    • tovve ( dal with some vegetable)
    • Chitraanna (Lemon rice, Vegetable Bhaath,  etc..)
    • Paysa(Kheer)
    • Raita or Majjige Huli
last but not the least, .....tasty Rasam.

All above items you can make for Shastra (in small quantities) and the main dish(rice and special dish) in large quantities.

In my next post I will be providing the recipes for these common dishes before moving  on to the first festival coming up "Makara Sankranti"........................................................
